Man Utd injury news: who's out, who's a doubt
Shaw and Mainoo are the big worries, Sesko's shin is a mystery and Amad hasn't been seen since August. Here's what's confirmed and what isn't before Leeds.
Michael Carrick "is not one for giving expansive injury updates," as BBC Sport's Simon Stone put it last week. He's right, which means United's medical picture has to be pieced together from what's been said on the record and what's been seen.
Here's where things stand before Leeds on Sunday, with what's confirmed kept separate from what isn't.
Confirmed: Shaw and Mainoo missed Madrid
Both picked up problems in the 1-1 draw with Spurs. "They've not travelled, both picked up issues in the game at the weekend so they're out," Carrick said on Monday, as reported by the Guardian.
Nobody has said whether either will be fit for Elland Road. Carrick's pre-match press conference should tell us more.
Losing Mainoo hurts most. He's the one United midfielder who reliably carries the ball through pressure. Without him, the midfield in Madrid looked short of ideas until Baleba and Tielemans got going.
Shaw is the bigger structural problem, simply because there's no like-for-like replacement. More on that here.
Confirmed: Fernandes is "carrying something"
Carrick told reporters before Atlético that his captain was still "carrying something", per the Guardian. He's played through it. It might explain a few heavy touches lately, but that's our reading, not the club's.
Unclear: Sesko's shin
BBC Sport reported that Benjamin Sesko pulled out of Slovenia duty this month, and that there had been "no word from United or Slovenia" about a recurrence of the shin injury that kept him out of the trip to Fulham. If it's serious, it's a big loss. Nobody has confirmed either way.
Unclear: Amad
Also from the BBC: there's been no sighting of Amad Diallo in training on official pictures since he missed the opening-day defeat at Hull with an ankle injury. That's two months. United haven't given a timeline.
Returning: Rashford, De Ligt
Marcus Rashford pulled out of England duty this month but started in Madrid, so he's fine. Matthijs de Ligt has been working his way back; the BBC noted unconfirmed talk of him playing in a behind-closed-doors game against Lausanne.
Suspended? Not for Leeds
Leny Yoro was sent off against Atlético. That was a Champions League red, so any ban applies in Europe rather than the Premier League. He should be available on Sunday.
Our verdict
United's injury list isn't catastrophic in numbers. It's the positions that hurt: the only senior left-back, the best ball-carrying midfielder and the first-choice striker all in doubt at once.
If Shaw and Mainoo both miss Leeds, Carrick's going to Elland Road with half a spine. He needs at least one of them back.
